Guests text a word like DINNER to your number and join your list. In Easify this is Text to Join: you pick the keyword, the contact group new members land in, and the auto reply they get. Keywords match whatever the guest types, upper or lower case.

Put the keyword where guests already look:

Table tents and the bottom of the menu: “Text DINNER to (555) 010-0199 for weekly specials.”

Receipts and takeout bags.

Your website and social profiles, next to your reservation link.

A sign at the host stand for guests on the waitlist.

Three settings are worth turning on:

Double opt-in. The guest texts the keyword, then confirms with a second keyword before they are added. It filters out typos and gives you a clear record that they agreed.

Age verification for a bar or happy-hour list. You set a minimum age, the guest replies with their date of birth (MM-DD-YYYY), and only guests old enough are added.

Opt-in forms on your website, for guests who find you online. Write your own consent line on the form: what you’ll text, roughly how often, and that they can reply STOP.

Don’t upload a list you bought, or one from a delivery app or a partner. A simple routine: schedule the whole week’s texts on Monday morning.

Set up the welcome automation once

Create a contact group, for example “Text club”.

Add a Text to Join keyword that adds guests to that group, with double opt-in if you want it.

In the automation builder, choose the trigger “Contact joins to a particular group” and pick “Text club”.

Use your welcome template as the Text to Join auto reply (the confirmation auto reply with double opt-in). Automations don’t add the STOP line, so put it in any template they send.

Add a wait, then a second “Send SMS” with a first-visit reason to come in. Automations don’t check your quiet hours, and a 1-day wait sends at the hour the guest joined. Put the offer in the welcome text, or send it in your next scheduled campaign.

Optionally add an If/Else on the reply: if the guest replies BOOK, send your reservation link.

Read more on building workflows on the marketing automation page.

When to text and how often

Send marketing texts between 8am and 9pm in the guest’s time zone; that is the federal limit. Florida and Oklahoma are stricter: 8am to 8pm, and no more than three messages in 24 hours on the same topic.

For restaurants, the useful window is narrower. Send lunch specials in the late morning, before people decide where to eat. Send dinner offers in the early to mid afternoon. A text at 6:45pm about a 7pm special is usually too late.

Easify helps here with quiet hours: set your open and close hours under Settings, and the console asks you to confirm before sending outside them, using the recipient’s time zone. It covers texts you send from the console, not automations. New accounts start at 9am to 6pm, so widen it if you text dinner offers later in the day.

On frequency, say how often you’ll text in the welcome message and stay under it. Start with one or two marketing texts a week and watch your opt-out ratio. If it climbs after a send, slow down. Service texts (reminders, table ready) don’t count toward that number.

Keep texts short. One SMS segment holds 160 standard characters, or 70 if the text has an emoji. Longer texts are split and billed per segment, and Easify caps a message at 10 segments. Check a draft with the SMS segment calculator.

Texting rules for restaurants

Consent. Federal law requires prior express written consent for marketing texts sent with an autodialer, and carriers expect written consent for every marketing text, so get it first. Keep a record of when and how each guest agreed. Double opt-in through Text to Join gives you that record.

Guests who text first. If a guest texts you first, carrier guidelines treat that as consent to reply with relevant information in that conversation. It is not consent to add them to your promotions.

Confirm the opt-in. After someone joins, send a confirmation first: program name, how to get help, how to opt out, and how often messages come.

Name the restaurant. Name your business in the first message, and keep it in every marketing text.

Opt-out. Include “Reply STOP to opt out” on marketing texts, and honor an opt-out sent by any reasonable means promptly, and never later than 10 business days. In Easify, replies like STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END or QUIT (plus any opt-out words you add) put the number on your Blacklist, and campaigns and automations skip it. A guest who replies START is taken off the Blacklist. Opt-outs in other words, like “please stop texting me”, aren’t caught, so add those numbers to the Blacklist by hand.

No bought or shared lists. Carrier rules don’t allow texting purchased, rented or shared lists.

Links. Use your full link or a link on your own domain. Don’t use public shorteners like bit.ly: industry guidance calls for a shortener dedicated to your business, and carrier filters often block shared ones.

Register your number. Register your brand and each campaign before you send from a 10-digit number; carriers require it and block unregistered traffic. Easify’s 10DLC registration support walks you through it.

Do Not Call. Check numbers against the National Do Not Call Registry and your internal DNC list before a campaign.

For a step-by-step list, use the TCPA checklist.

This section is general information, not legal advice: check state rules with your compliance counsel.

Where texting fits among restaurant marketing tools

The best marketing tools for restaurants each do one job. Each text asks for one action, like booking or ordering.

Is it legal for a restaurant to text customers?
Yes, with consent. Get written consent before marketing texts, name your restaurant, include “Reply STOP to opt out”, and send between 8am and 9pm in the guest’s time zone (8am to 8pm in Florida and Oklahoma). This is general information, not legal advice.

How often should a restaurant send marketing texts?
Tell guests how often in your welcome text and stay under it. One or two marketing texts a week is a reasonable start; slow down if opt-outs rise. Reminders and table-ready texts don’t count.

What should a restaurant text message say?
Your restaurant’s name, one offer or piece of news, one action with a link or reply keyword, and “Reply STOP to opt out” on marketing texts. See the templates above.

Can I automate restaurant marketing texts?
Yes, for anything that starts when a guest joins a group, like a follow-up after the welcome text. Automations don’t check your quiet hours, so a delayed offer can land late at night; putting it in the welcome text is safer. Specials and event texts are scheduled campaigns. Easify doesn’t connect to POS or reservation systems, so birthday or “haven’t visited lately” texts aren’t triggered automatically.

What are the best marketing tools for restaurants?
A mix: texting for time-sensitive offers and reminders, email for menus and newsletters, a loyalty program, review management, and social media, tied together with marketing automation.

How much does restaurant SMS marketing cost?
Easify plans start at $99 a month, and US plans run on credits (see how credits work). 10DLC registration has a one-time compliance fee of $100 under 6,000 SMS segments, or $250 at 6,000 or more. Full details are on the pricing page.

Conclusion

Start with a keyword on your table tents, a welcome automation, and one well-timed special a week. Add reminders and table-ready texts for the guests already in your seats, and watch replies, clicks and redemptions to decide what to send next.

Start your 7-day free trial and launch your restaurant text club this week.
